Ways To Avoid Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents in the US, and the worst part of it is that nearly all of us are guilty of engaging in the behavior. Everything from cell phones to passengers to food and drink and even your car itself can cause distracted driving habits, and the best way to avoid them is to know what they are and how to ignore them.

Cell Phones

When you start driving, always put your phone in a pocket, a glove box, or someplace else where you can’t readily get to it. Most of us can’t fight the urge to check an email or text, or even catch Pokémon while we drive, so out of sight out of mind is best practice for cell phones in the car.

Food & Drink

You may think it’s harmless to grab a burger or a cup of coffee while driving, but a blob of ketchup on a work shirt or a spilled cup of joe means your attention is anywhere but on the road ahead. Instead of risking it, simply wait until you get to your destination to chow down.

Passengers

This can be the toughest to avoid. Having passengers in your vehicle can be a major distraction, but a quick discussion with them before you depart about the dangers of distracting the driver ought to help.

The Car Itself

Cars these days are so sophisticated, all the bells and whistles can be a distraction on the road. The best way to avoid this distraction is by making sure your radio, GPS, and the rest are all configured before you leave your driveway, and you keep your hands off the knobs and dials until you reach your destination.

Arrive Alive!

None of these distractions are worth crashing your car, and possibly injuring yourself or others. Being mindful of distractions on the road will help you avoid them and arrive alive!
